Cherry blossom (late March–early April, confirmed by JMA forecast) · momiji autumn leaves (Nov 10–30, Shirakawa-go and Kyoto peak colour) · winter illuminations (December, USJ Christmas + Shirakawa-go winter light-up). October and May are also lovely with fewer crowds.

★★★★★
"Fushimi Inari at 5 a.m., empty torii tunnel, not another visitor in sight. The photographer caught my family walking under the red gates; that image became our Christmas card. Cross Hotel Kyoto is right in the centre, easy walk to Kyoto Station."

★★★★★
"Shirakawa-go in autumn, brown thatched roofs against red and gold leaves, almost tearful to look at. Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama is steps from the morning market and Sanmachi Suji; the Hida-gyu yakiniku dinner the kids still talk about."
· November 2026 · momiji departure
★★★★★
"USJ for a full day, my 11-year-old and 8-year-old didn't stop. Super Nintendo World and Hogwarts Castle. Express Pass 4 saved us the queues at the top attractions. Mercure Tokyu Stay Osaka is walking distance to Dotonbori, the Glico sign at night was the kids' highlight."

FAQ, Japan

Common questions

Is the USJ Express Pass necessary?
USJ gets very crowded, especially Super Nintendo World (Mario) and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the top rides (Mario Kart, Hagrid's Motorbike, Forbidden Journey) can have 60–120 min standby lines. Express Pass 4 (~THB 5,000/pax) skips queues at 4 attractions, very worth it for families. Express Pass 7 (~THB 9,000/pax) covers 7. Optional, we can add either; not bundled by default.
Is Shirakawa-go visitable year-round?
Yes. Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO village famous for its Gassho-zukuri thatched-roof houses. Best moments: Jan–Feb (snow cover + the famous winter light-up, only 6–7 nights/year, must book 6 months ahead), November (autumn colour around the village), March–April (cherry blossoms), June–August (lush green).
When does the Shinhotaka Ropeway close?
Open almost year-round. Closes for one week each November for maintenance. Winter (Dec–Mar) brings fully snow-covered mountains, summer (Jun–Aug) brings clear skies and views of 3,000 m peaks, autumn (Oct–Nov) brings dramatic reds. Japan's only double-decker cable car, departing every 30 minutes.
Why doesn't Wanvela use ryokan as standard?
Most clients prefer private bathrooms, raised beds, and proper storage, traditional ryokan can't always provide these. If a one-night ryokan is wanted as an experience, we add it at Hida Takayama (Hidatei Hanaougi) or Arashiyama (Benkei) as a Private Trip add-on, choosing properties with en-suite bathrooms and chair-style dining for guests who don't sit on tatami easily.
Is the trip suitable for younger children?
Excellent for ages 6+. USJ is the highlight for children, Arashiyama's bamboo grove is easy to walk, Dotonbori is full of kid-friendly street food, Shirakawa-go is safe and the thatched houses fascinate kids. For under-6 we can reduce USJ to a half day and add Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan instead. Children pay 65–80% of adult rate. Japan is visa-free for Thai passports (up to 15 days).
How far ahead should we book for cherry blossom or momiji?
Very far. April cherry blossom and mid-November momiji hotels are sold out 6–9 months ahead. We recommend reaching out by July of the previous year. We lock the hotels first and confirm travel dates against the JMA forecast around February. Shirakawa-go winter light-up requires booking 12 months ahead, we can include it if booking time allows.
