When the lavender blooms - and where

The most frequent question Wanvela receives about Provence is, "What month do I come to see the lavender?" The real answer, late June to mid-July. And it's narrower than people think.

For 2026, the Conservatoire des Plantes Aromatiques forecasts peak bloom between 25 June and 18 July, depending on field altitude.

Valensole vs Sault - which one

Two main areas come up most often.

  • Plateau de Valensole · altitude 500m, blooms first, late June to mid-July. Fields stretch to the horizon. The image on every Instagram. On the D6 road, near Lake Sainte-Croix.
  • Sault Plateau · altitude 800m, blooms later, mid-July to mid-August. Smaller fields, but stunning. Far fewer crowds. Best for travelers seeking quiet.

Wanvela tip, if you arrive early July, you can still catch Valensole's peak, then drive 1 hour to Sault on the 8th–10th and catch the early bloom there in the same day.

The fields we use for photography

We take clients to four spots that aren't on the standard tourist circuit.

  1. Lavandes Angelvin (Valensole), family farm with peach and sunflowers interleaved, every frame layered
  2. Abbaye de Sénanque (Gordes), a 12th-century abbey in the middle of a lavender field, the iconic Provence image
  3. Bonnieux back roads, the D232 between Bonnieux and Ménerbes, with honey-stone hilltop villages as backdrop
  4. Lavandes du Château du Bois (Sault), premium-grade fields grown for essential oil
"When the timing is right, you'll see bees crossing the petals in every photograph. It's not just a beautiful image, it's Provence breathing." - CAN, founder note from July 2024

The hotel we use as a base

We use La Mirande in Avignon as a three-night base for the Provence Lavender Trip, 1 hour 20 minutes from Valensole, 35 minutes from Gordes, 1 hour 30 minutes from Sault. Centrally placed.

Best times to photograph

Golden hour in Provence in July is 6:00–7:30 in the morning and 19:30–21:00 in the evening. The lavender looks best at evening, the angled light creates shadow between the rows. Bees are in the fields after 9:30 am, so for those who are nervous, leave at 6:30.

What we'd add to a lavender trip

To keep the trip from being only "photograph a lavender field," we add:

  • Distillery tour at Château du Bois, see the extraction process
  • Truffle market in Carpentras (if Friday)
  • Picnic on Mont Ventoux with Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine
  • Dinner at Restaurant La Mirande, 1 Michelin star
