Iceland Ring Road - 8 vs 10 Nights

The Iceland Ring Road in 8 or 10 nights, compared, plus why Wanvela won't do it in less than 8.

What the Ring Road is

Route 1 is the highway loop around Iceland, 1,332 kilometres, the signature of every kind of Iceland road trip, from budget campervans to the luxury jeep tours Wanvela arranges.

Every Iceland trip we run goes clockwise from Reykjavík, South Coast → East Fjords → North Iceland → Snæfellsnes → back to Reykjavík.

Why we won't do it in less than 8 nights

A client once asked whether the Ring Road can be done in six nights. Our answer, it can, but it shouldn't. Because:

  • Winter snow forces slow driving on some segments, Vík to Höfn is normally 3 hours; in winter it can be 5.
  • Photo stops, every 20–30 minutes there's a spot worth pausing for. On a packed schedule, you don't even get out of the car.
  • Major activities (glacier walk, ice cave, helicopter) each take half a day. You can't fit all of it.

The 8-night version - the standard

This program suits first-time Iceland clients.

  1. Night 1–2 · Reykjavík (Hotel Borg or Sandhotel), Blue Lagoon, downtown
  2. Night 3 · Vík, South Coast waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss), Reynisfjara black sand beach
  3. Night 4 · Höfn, Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, Diamond Beach, ice cave
  4. Night 5 · Egilsstaðir, East Fjords, hot springs
  5. Night 6 · Akureyri, northern capital, Goðafoss waterfall
  6. Night 7 · Hellnar (Snæfellsnes Peninsula), Kirkjufell mountain
  7. Night 8 · Reykjavík, final dinner, departure

The 10-night version - the deeper one

Two extra nights for clients who want more depth.

  • +1 night in Höfn → adds a helicopter glacier landing + two ice cave sites
  • +1 night in Akureyri → adds Mývatn nature baths, Dettifoss waterfall, whale watching in Húsavík

Approximate cost addition: THB 38,000 per guest, mostly helicopter and the two extra hotel nights.

"Iceland rushed is torture; Iceland given time becomes meditation. We will not ask you to hurry." - Wanvela trip leader briefing

The hotels we use

  • Hotel Borg by Keahotels · Reykjavík, Art Deco classic since 1930
  • Hotel Rangá · South Coast, country lodge, hot tubs, aurora viewing deck
  • Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon · Höfn, view directly over Vatnajökull
  • Deplar Farm (premium option) · North, Eleven Experience property, helicopter access

Which month

Iceland has two seasons Wanvela works:

  • Summer (June–August) · midnight sun, glaciers fully visible, every road open, but no aurora
  • Winter (November–March) · aurora season, ice caves open, 4–6 hours of daylight

We particularly favour September–October, aurora begins to appear, the roads are all still open, and the temperature isn't yet deep negative.
